Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

a traditional fall dessert with cinnamon-coated apples topped with buttery-brown sugar & oat crumble.

Hello, friends!

Well, fall is in full swing here in Minnesota!

The trees are starting to turn. Temperatures are dropping. And I’m busy filling up my pantry and freezer with the last of the bounty from our local farmer’s market.

Along with some squash and other veggies that I cut up and froze to make soups, I also made a few batches of apple pie filling and applesauce.

Then it was time to do some baking. I like to keep a few of our favorite quick bread recipes on hand like our Apple Fritter Bread and Mini Banana-Raisin and Banana Chocolate Chip. They are perfect for a quick breakfast, brunch addition, and dessert throughout the winter months.

After all of that, I still had some apples leftover, so I made up Michael’s favorite fall dessert.

Apple Crisp!

As I was putting it together, I realized I’ve never shared the recipe here on the blog, so that’s exactly what I’m doing today!

I have so many memories of this classic dessert growing up.

Mom would always serve it warm from the oven, and she’d usually top it with a scoop of ice cream, or our favorite…Cool Whip! LOL!

Later, I made the same recipe (with a few minor adjustments) for my own family.

And I can still remember when I passed the recipe onto my daughter, Mel.

She had called me that fall day, shortly after she and her husband had moved into their first home. She wanted to surprise him with a special apple dessert.

I mentioned the apple crisp recipe and her response was, “Oh mom, that’s so…old fashioned.”

She was right. The recipe had been around for a long time. But there was plenty of reasons why it had. #1 because it was SOOO yummy! # 2 it was SOOO easy to make! and # 3 there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being old-fashioned! Some of the best things in life are just that!

In the end, she did take down the recipe and make it. And of course, just as I had suspected, it was a huge hit.

We’ve both made the recipe a hundred times since I’m sure. It is and will always be a family favorite.

Recipe Notes

what apples should you use for apple crisp?

You can basically use any apple, but I prefer to use apples that are made for baking. They are usually a bit on the sweeter side and are a softer apple so they bake up tender not crunchy.

what can you serve apple crisp with?

As I mentioned my favorites are fresh whipped cream (Cool Whip will do in a pinch), and vanilla ice cream. I’ve also served the crisp with my favorite Cinnamon ice cream when I can find it, and if I have some on hand, a drizzle of Salted Caramel sauce.
