DIY Mid Century Modern Wall Art

A quick and easy+ SUPEr budget-friendly DIY to create modern wall art

Hello, friends!

Well, as I mentioned Wednesday, we’ve been busy doing all the ‘behind the scene’s work in our soon-to-be home office. The demo is complete and now we are working on wiring, drywall, and then paint.

In the meantime, I’m trying to fit in a few ‘mini’ DIYs as far as decor and accessories that I want to add to the space.

If you follow along you’ll remember I created a mood board to share the Mid Century Modern look I’m going for in this new home office.

So today I’m going to share with you a SUPER easy-SUPER budget-friendly way I created some modern wall for the space!

what you’ll need for this DIY wall art:

  • 8×10 Natural wood Picture Frames **If you want them already matted you can find ones similar here.
  • 5×7 Natural wood Picture Frame
  • Poster Board (This is only needed if your frames aren’t matted)
  • Craft Paper with Geometric Designs **I bought mine for 10¢ each at a local craft store. These are similar. You also use wrapping paper!
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Geometric stencils (optional)
how to make mid century modern wall art:

FOR THE LARGER FRAMES:

There are SO many colors and patterns to choose from! The options are endless, really.  But since this new office space’s design is going to be VERY neutral as far as furnishings, wall color, curtains, etc. I decided that I wanted to add pops of color in the wall art. I also wanted it to be modern-geometric prints. Lastly, I wanted each frame to follow the same color scheme. My starting point came from this bright and colorful word art sheet.

  1. Cut out your matte (If your frame doesn’t come with one)

I simply traced the backing from an 8×10 frame onto the poster board. Then I cut it out. Then I lined up the backing from a 5×7 frame and traced that onto the center of my 8×10 frame. Once that was cut out, I was ready to fill my frame.

2. Cut out your paper to fit the frame.

Again I used the back of my picture frame and traced it out on the lettered paper. I wanted it to be a bit larger than the 5×7 cut-out. Once I had it traced I cut it out.

3. Fill your frame.

To do this I turned my frame over and placed the matte down first onto the glass. Then I placed my paper face down onto that. Finally, I secured it with the backing.

I repeated the same steps with the second 8×10 frame only this time I used this fun “rainbow’ pattern.

FOR THE SMALLER FRAME

  1. Cut out a 5×7 piece of the poster board to fill your frame.
  2. Cut out the shapes

Originally I was going to cut out shapes using the other sheets of paper. But then I remembered I had some geometric stencils I could use instead. So I simply popped the half-moon and oval stencils out and used them for the smaller frame. (Note: I ended up using two of the half-moon shapes instead of what I photographed.)

**You could definitely buy geometric cut-out shapes at Hobby Lobby or any craft store. Or, you could use stencils and trace them onto patterned paper if you want more texture.

3. Glue the shapes onto the poster board.

4. Flip your frame over and put the poster board in.

5. Place the frame backing on.

Viola! You have bright-colorful and TOTALLY modern wall art!

I found similar wall art at places like Anthropologie, West Elm, and Society 6 for anywhere from $45-$100 for a set! My cost?
  • $4 for each 8×10 frame ($8)
  • $2.50 for a 5×7 frame
  • $1 for post board
  • 20¢ for paper
  • $0 for stencils

$11.70!!! Woot! Woot! (Yes, I’m over here doing the happy dance!)

I hope today’s post inspired you to make your own bright-colorful and yes, modern wall art for your own home!

  2. Thank you, Michelle! I’m glad you like them! I don’t know about selling them but hey, you never know right?! I appreciate your confidence, my friend!

  3. I can’t believe I missed this one, Christine! You’re always coming up with super easy and creative ideas. My sister is working on an office that has mostly black and whites and this idea will be perfect for her. Can’t wait to see how your office comes together. Love all the bright and cheery colors.
