Homemade Waffles

Light-fluffy and oh so delicious! That’s what these homemade waffles are. Perfect for family brunch, a weekend treat, or a quick and easy weekday breakfast!

Hello, friends!

For those who have been following along for even a hot minute, you know how much I  LOVE breakfast!

If not, let me just tell you now that it is my absolute FAVORITE meal of the day! In fact, I could eat so-called ‘breakfast’ food for lunch, snacks, AND dinner! That’s how much I LOVE it!

You can find plenty of breakfast treats under my recipes tab, but today I’m sharing one of my all-time FAVORITES!

Waffles have always been a ‘special’ treat for me.  Mom would rarely make them as a kid, and when she did it always seemed like such a process.

Divide the eggs…sift the flour…scoop the precise amount of batter into the waffle iron and if you didn’t what a mess! …oh and then you had to clean the waffle iron. UGH!

It just seemed like a lot of work, so like I said, I only made them on special occasions.

Until that is, I decided a few years back to change up the original recipe I’d been using. Not only did those changes make the waffles even lighter and fluffier, but they also made them MORE delicious AND they were so much easier to make too!

Better yet, I learned a few tricks along the way on the ‘clean up’ part too! I’ll be sharing those later in the post.

For now, let’s get started on those yummy waffles!

Kitchen tools:
ingredients:
  • Flour
  • White Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Vanilla
  • Eggs
  • Melted Butter (you can also use Vegetable Oil)
how to make homemade waffles:
  • Add your milk, eggs, and vanilla to a large mixing bowl.
  • Whip the mixture with a whisk until it is totally combined.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a medium mixing bowl.
  • Pour the dry ingredients in with the wet and whisk until just combined.
  • Fold the melted butter into the batter until just combined.
  • Preheat your waffle iron. On this particular brand (DASH) the iron is ready when the light goes off.
  • When the iron is hot lift the lid and spray the inside thoroughly with non-stick cooking spray.
  • If you’re making regular size waffles fill a 1/2 cup measuring cup with batter and pour onto the center of the waffle iron. ***NOTE: If you’re making mini waffles use a 1/4 cup.
  • Shut the lid of the waffle iron and allow it to cook for 3 minutes or until golden brown. ***NOTE: Most waffle irons will have a light that will shut off when the waffle is done. If you wish to have a darker waffle you’ll need to leave it in for a minute or so longer.
  • Lift the lid and carefully remove the waffle by lifting it up with a fork.

what do I serve with waffles?

ANYTHING! Okay, kidding. There truly are some great sides you can enjoy with your waffles. Some of my favorites are fresh fruit! Strawberries, Blueberries, and Bananas, just to name a few. I also LOVE flavored butter. (You can find my recipes for sweet and savory butter here.)

Other options are proteins like ham, turkey, sausages, bacon, and even eggs!

Oh…and of course syrup! Maple is amazing but I also love making my own fruit syrups like raspberry and blueberry! (I’ll be sharing more on those in another post.)

And if you’re looking for a way to serve it all up nice and pretty, why not create a breakfast board?

tips and tricks for this recipe:
  1. To make the waffles fluffier, make sure you whisk the eggs, milk, and vanilla mixture for several minutes. It should be frothy and well combined.
  2. Don’t skip sifting the dry ingredients. Again, if you want the waffles to be light and fluffy this step is a MUST!
  3. Make sure the melted butter has cooled before adding it to the batter. This will prevent the eggs from cooking (YUCK) and will also maintain the light and airy batter consistency.
can you make this waffle recipe ahead of time?

Yes! But I wouldn’t recommend mixing the batter up more than a day or two in advance. Any longer and it will definitely affect how light and fluffy the waffles are.

can you reheat the waffles?

You definitely can! I LOVE these waffles as leftovers and usually just throw them in our air fryer for 4-5 minutes to warm up. But if you don’t have an air fryer just place them in a 350° oven until heated through. (Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn!) You could also use a toaster oven or microwave. Although they won’t crisp up in the microwave.

freezing the waffles:

If you have leftovers and want to eat them at a later time, no worries. Simply place the cooled waffles on a baking sheet and freeze for 30 minutes. Then remove the frozen waffles and place them in freezer bags and until ready to eat. ***NOTE: Waffles will last in the freezer for up to six months

Recipe Notes

These light and fluffy, SUPER yummy waffles would be the perfect treat for the upcoming holiday weekend. Or how about making a batch for the dad (s) in your life! What a delicious way to make them feel special!!! BTW, I guarantee the kids will LOVE to help and the best part is…they can!!!

And what about that clean-up tip I mentioned at the beginning of the post?!

Well, whether you’re waffle iron is big or teeny tiny like this one, it’s going to have to be cleaned up after making a batch of waffles. Some waffle irons have removable plates that you could wash in the sink, but most do not.

Here’s what I do.

  1. Allow your waffle iron to cool completely.
  2. Grab a clean toothbrush! Yes, that’s right. I said toothbrush! It’s the best tool for cleaning SO many things, but especially your waffle iron! First, just use it to brush away and leftover crumbs or bits of waffle.
  3. Then wet it down with a solution of vinegar and water. This REALLY helps remove any residue leftover from the cooking spray! Vinegar is also a great cleaner and natural disinfectant too!
  4. Take a clean damp cloth and wipe down the inside and then the outside of the iron.
  5. Allow to dry and store for the next time!!

And that my friends is a wrap! Everything you want or need to know about making waffles! So now, instead of only making them on special occasions, you make them any time you have a craving!

I hope you enjoy today’s recipe for Homemade Waffles!

  1. These waffles sound delicious!!! And your tips for cleaning a waffle iron are super smart. I have a waffle iron and never use it simply because I don’t want to clean it. Lol! Now I see how easy it can actually be!
