Apple Fritter Bread
A quick and easy bread filled with layers of apples, nutmeg, and cinnamon, topped with cinnamon sugar and a creamy vanilla glaze!

Are there any apple fritter fans out there?
If you can’t tell, I have my hand raised and I’m jumping up and down! Yes, I am a fan of those puffy, apple-filled fried wonders.
I always have been.
And since we only live three blocks from our local bakery, I could have one any time I wanted.
Of course, I could make them myself too. But here’s the thing. I’m not a fan of deep-frying. And I’m especially not a fan of how it makes me feel whenever I eat deep-fried food.
UGH!
So even though I would LOVE to eat those yummy fritters like I did when I was a kid, it’s just not happening.
But I’m okay with that. Because now, whenever I want a fritter, I need look no further than today’s recipe!
That’s right! Even though this recipe clearly states it’s bread, I swear to you it tastes JUST like your favorite apple fritters!
It even has the same soft chewy inside and crispy cinnamon glazed outside.
And unlike many apple fritters you’ll find at your bakery-this Apple Fritter bread is FILLED with apples!
So every bite you take has a chunk of sweet and tart apple.
How do you get both a sweet and tart apple flavor?
I use two of my favorite kinds of apples. McIntosh is soft (good for baking) and has a bit of a tart flavor. Whereas, Cortland apples are crisp, with a sweet flavor. The combination is perfection.
But since there are so many varieties of apples depending on where you live, other choices might be, Tart: Paula Red, Haralson, Wealthy-Sweet: Honey Crisp, Beacon, Red Delicious.
So how do we take a favorite treat like an apple fritter and turn it into bread?
Well, honestly, it took a few tries for me to develop just the right recipe!
Like I mentioned earlier, I wanted the right texture and flavor, without the deep frying.
Obviously, it’s not exact, but I have to say, it’s pretty darn close.
As for the ingredient list? I guarantee you have everything you’ll need right there in your pantry or refrigerator.
To start you’ll need butter and sugar. And once that is all creamed nicely together, you’ll need a couple of eggs.
Next, you’ll want to mix your dry ingredients in another bowl. When blended, add that to your wet ingredients. The dough will be on the thick side. That’s what you want! Then fold in the apples. The natural juices from the apples will thin the batter a bit, but not much.
When every inch of your batter is filled with those sweet and tart apples, it’s time to put it in a greased bread pan. Last but certainly not least, a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar and then in the oven that pan of deliciousness goes!
Once in the oven, I do apologize, but your house is going to fill up with the smell of apples and cinnamon. I hope you don’t mind. Because when you take the bread out of the oven, the smell lingers a wee bit longer. You’ll know the bread is done by sticking a toothpick inside, but that golden crispy topping is a giveaway too!
Speaking of that topping. Did I mention that we add a wee bit of vanilla glaze over that crispy cinnamon sugar? Yes. Yes, we do. And that’s the extra touch needed to make this bread even more like an apple fritter!
And don’t be shy when you’re cutting a piece of this moist, and deliciously spiced bread either. You want every slice to be thick just like a regular apple fritter would be.

Apple Fritter Bread
A quick and easy bread filled with layers of apples and spices, topped with cinnamon sugar and a vanilla glaze.
Ingredients
For the Bread
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups apples chopped
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Cinnamon Sugar (Topping)
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
Vanilla Glaze
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 Tablespoon half and half
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Grease a standard loaf pan with spray or butter. Set aside.
Cream together butter and sugar in a stand mixer or large bowl. Add in eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until just incorporated. Fold in apples. Spread evenly into the loaf pan. Meanwhile, combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top of the bread. Bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before removing from the pan. Whisk together the vanilla glaze ingredients and drizzle over the top of the bread. Serve. ***May be kept in the refrigerator for 1 week or freezer for up to 3 months.
So there you have it! My recipe for Apple Fritter Bread! Serve it up with your morning coffee, as an afternoon snack, or alongside your favorite brunch entree!
As I mention in the recipe, you can store this bread in the refrigerator for 1 week (it won’t last that long I promise), or make a couple of loaves and freeze them! That way you’ll have a delicious treat anytime you want it!

It’s a perfect 10 on 10 fritter recipe. Like you, I struggle with deep fried food. This bread just is perfect as it looks so moist and loved you have used sweet and tart both apples. I am lucky to have both the varieties of apple trees in my backyard and I’m always looking for apple recipes, this is going to be a farewell apple bread as the fall is nearly there.

Hello, Barbara! The recipe calls for 2 cups of apples. Which is the equivalent of about 3 medium apples.
Thank you so much for sharing Christine, I have to try those . The Apple Fritters is one of my favorite desserts!! If you ever go to Pigeon Forge you have to stop in at the Applewood Restaurant . I have been going there for over 25 years and I haven’t missed a year yet ! Now I go at least 3 times a year if not 4 times. Just can’t get enough of going there to visit . They give you a serving of them with blueberry muffins and a serving of their very own homemade apple butter . Trust me they are delicious you can’t eat just one!!!
