Trash to Treasure-Garden Seed Storage

Create storage for garden seeds using an inexpensive thrift store find!

Today I’m super excited to be sharing this month’s first Trash to Treasure project!!

Except the item that I repurposed was definitely not trash. At least not to me.

You all know how I love to cook and bake, so this recipe box was a special find for me. Of course, I have FAR too many recipes to keep in a small box like this, and I wouldn’t any way for fear they would get damaged.

Still, I love to think that this one was used in someone’s home and family for many years which makes it a treasure not trash.

But, since the box has just been sitting in my stash for a couple of years not having any purpose, I decided to give it one.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Paint(** I used a mix of Waverly Moss and white for the box and black for the lettering)

Paint Brush

Sandpaper

Stencils (2″)

Stencil Brush (small)

Tape

Handle ( I repurposed an old window latch)

 

How to Create Garden Seed Storage Box:

Step One:

Give the recipe box a light sanding to prepare it for paint. (This step isn’t necessary per instructions on chalk paint but I do it anyway.) Wipe the box down with a clean damp cloth to remove any dust.

Step Two:

Apply the first coat of paint. (I started with just the Moss color, but as it dried I felt it was a bit darker than what I wanted.)

So I mixed in some white and tada the perfect green!

***You can definitely tell the difference.

Step Three:

Once the first coat of paint dries (about 30 minutes) give the box a good sanding and apply another coat of paint. Allow that to dry completely (about 1 hour).

Step Four:

Distress the box by giving it a light sanding (especially around the edges).

Step Five:

Add your hardware. I used this handle from one of our old windows. I think it adds the perfect rustic charm I was looking for. But you could use any handle or knob. You could even get creative and use an old spoon or piece of metal.

 

Step Six:

Add your stencil.  I measured the top of the box. Found center and marked where I wanted the stencils to line up with a pencil. (I wiped the line away later with a damp cloth.)

Step Seven:

Distress your lettering with a light sanding.

And VIOLA! That unused recipe box is now going to be a MUCH used storage box for all my garden seeds!

I haven’t ordered any new seeds this year because I’m not sure what our time table will be once we put our current home on the market. But I did have some leftover from last year!

To get them organized I just used some index cards I had on hand and marked them with a highlighter. Green for veggies, pink for fruit, and so on. Nothing fancy but it keeps my seeds organized in one place and I LOVE that!

Everything I used for this project I already had on hand so the cost was $0

Now I know not everyone has a recipe box on hand, but you could really use any kind of box. Heck, even a shoebox! Just wrap it with some pretty paper!

The weather is expected to drop down below freezing several nights here, so I won’t be out gardening just yet. But when it warms up, I’m ready to plant!
