Quick and Easy Hot Cocoa Mix

How to make delicious homemade hot cocoa with just 4 ingredients in 1o minutes!

Hello, Friends!

If you follow along you’ll remember last week I shared a fun and inexpensive sign to go in our hot cocoa bar area!

It’s getting colder outside and we just received our first snowfall, so I’m definitely looking forward to some hot cocoa!

And today I’m going to share with you the hot cocoa we’ll be enjoying! This recipe is one I’ve been making for years and we absolutely LOVE it! Mostly because it’s SUPER easy to make, but also because it’s quite versatile too!

I’ve been known to change or add to the basic recipe over the years, based on my mood.

what you’ll need to make homemade hot cocoa mix

As you can see there’s nothing over the top when it comes to the basic recipe. Other than the dried milk, I always have the other ingredients in my pantry. TIP: I like to sift all the ingredients into a bowl and then spoon it into a tightly sealed jar or container!

what type of cocoa should I use?

My preference? Dark Cocoa, and I highly recommend Dutch Process cocoa because it provides a smoother, less bitter taste than natural cocoa.

why salt?

While we all know everything’s better with chocolate, what you might not know is chocolate is better with a wee bit of salt! Trust me on this! It truly enhances the flavor!

how to mix a cup of hot cocoa

Since this hot cocoa mix is made with dry milk, you can actually just add boiling water to this mix to make a cup. But sometimes I prefer my hot cocoa SUPER creamy, and then I use milk! Both need to be warmed up nice and hot so you get a steamy cup of this delicious chocolate cocoa! Of course, toppings are optional, but my choices would be marshmallows or whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. And I always have a peppermint stick to stir! 🙂

DIRECTIONS:

  • Add 1/3 cup of mix to a 1 cup hot milk or boiling water

And that’s it! In less than 10 minutes you have a YUMMY cup of rich and creamy hot cocoa!

  1. I love keeping a glass container of hot chocolate mix available for the Christmas season especially Christmas morning. My mix is running low so thanks for sharing your recipe I am going to give it a try.

  2. What a great post for the holidays , we often make hot cocoa during this season , but a readymade mix, I will try this recipe with less sugar , and lot of marshmallows on the cocoa. Also love the addition of salt in the mix , so excited to try!

  3. This hot cocoa looks amazing, Christine! I love how you drizzled the extra bit of chocolate on the top too. It’s so pretty and totally fancy. I can’t wait to try this recipe. Hugs, CoCo
