Mood Board-Modern & Minimal Home Office Makeover!

re-creating a small space with a clean modern design!

Hello, friends!

Today is all about ROOM RENO!

That’s right!

We’ve got exactly TWO rooms left to do mostly cosmetic updates to before we put our current home on the market!

And I have to tell you, folks. The during photo’s are NOT pretty!

Now, normally when we do a room makeover I always share the full “BEFORE” photo with you. Unfortunately, before I had a chance to take photos Michael had already torn the entire room apart!

Oddly enough, this room started out way back when I bought it as a home office. And I just so happen to have a photo so you can get some idea of what the space looked like.

My style was a wee bit different back then, but the room, although not fancy was functional at the time. But then I decided to move my office into one of the larger bedrooms so this space was used for additional storage.

Usually, I am the one that is eager to dig in and get started with the demo. But I had to laugh because this time Michael couldn’t wait! Taking down a drop-down ceiling is not an easy task, especially when there is tons of nasty (and dusty) insulation. Along with massive amounts of glue! But that AMAZING hubby of mine did it! He also patched up some of the walls that were hiding behind paneling.

Thankfully, we aren’t repairing this wall. We will basically remove the plaster (sledgehammer, please) and cover up the lath with drywall. Cost will be minimal and labor, well, that’s free (me!)

This room only has one window so it’s not the brightest space, but we won’t be making any changes to the structure of the room. We will be installing a light fixture (already have one on hand) and adding a five-panel door to the closet(a budget-friendly purchase on Craigslist!)

the carpet is coming up and will be replaced! (more on that in another post!)

As you can see the room is quite small. It measures out to be 7.5′ x 9.

It would make a small bedroom (possibly a nursery), but since we have 3 good sized bedrooms upstairs, we decided a home office would be the best use of this space. Especially since they are prime real estate right now.

Since I work from home, my current office will be changed back into a bedroom once we have this new office completed.

I will be using this office space until we sell the house so it has to work not only for potential buyers but for me as well!

the design plan

Choosing a modern-minimalistic design was easy. If you’ve been following along then you know my style has always leaned more to modern farmhouse. (Well except for way back when in the before photo, Lol!) But, like people, styles change and I’m really loving the clean lines of modern design.

This space has plenty of challenges but Michael and I are always up for those. As for our budget-it’s VERY small, but definitely doable since we already have most of the material!

Storage is KEY in this teeny tiny space so we’re going UP instead of out to get it!

shelving units:

I absolutely LOVE the look of these modern ladder bookshelves!

They are a bit spendy so we are looking at how we could DIY a couple for less. But if not, I think the splurge is worth it and I’ll definitely use them in our new house! The clean lines are exactly what I was looking for and two of them will fill up one wall nicely.

***I will also be adding shelving units to the closet for additional storage and possibly wall shelves on the opposite wall.

flooring

As I mentioned we will be replacing the floor but I haven’t yet decided on what. I’m definitely leaning towards this lighter laminate.

I like the fresh clean look of it and I think it would make this small space ‘appear’ larger! But again, it all depends. Because we would like to replace all the flooring on the second floor and of course we would like it to be cohesive with the rest of the house.

But we’ll see.

WALL COLOR

The white we chose is Ultra Pure White. I went with this color because it’s perfect for the modern vibe I want in this space. I know some might think that ‘white’ is cold and uncozy but we’ve actually used this color in the hallway of the second floor and it truly has brightened up the whole space! Besides, I already have it on hand!

Complimentary Colors

Greige and black are colors we have mixed throughout our home, so it isn’t unusual that we will add that bit of ‘cohesiveness’ in this room as well. The greige will be minimal in things such as the rug, curtains, and pillows. The black will be in accessories such as the lamp, the shelving, and the base of the desk. I also plan to do a couple of DIY’s for the wall art which will incorporate light wood tones and black as well.

ACCESSORIES

Speaking of accessories…those will be as this room calls for VERY minimal. I want to add touches of green for sure. Whether that is with faux plants or real. I also want to add more of the light wood tones, and of course that classic black I adore. Note: All and any items I have or purchase will of course go with us when we sell, unless the buyers are interested.

workspace

Finally, I want to create the perfect MOST comfortable workspace I can. Because again, this room reno isn’t just to ‘sell’ our home. It has to be useable ‘UNTIL’ we do!

I chose both of these pieces for their modern clean lines, but also because I absolutely LOVE how comfortable that chair is!  On one of my VERY short and recent trips to Target, I couldn’t help but sit down and see if it was comfy! IT WAS!!! As for the desk I already have a perfectly good desk now, but my thought was again maybe a splurge here wouldn’t be so terrible since I’ll be taking it with me to our new home.

So, friends, that’s it for now!

The room has been gutted, and now it’s all about putting it back together and creating a liveable AND sellable space!

Stay tuned because we will be sharing plenty of DIY projects, along with design and decorating tips you won’t want to miss!

  1. I can’t wait to follow along on this process, Christine! I love all of your ideas. It’s going to look so good. Hugs, CoCo

  2. I love the items and the colors you’ve chosen to redo the room in! We’re working on our third bedroom, which has become storage. When we got the vinyl floor up, the wood floor underneath was perfectly fine! I have no idea why they covered it up. I’m so glad because now all we have to do is refinish it instead of putting down more flooring. Good luck finishing up the room! I can’t wait to see it all come together!

  3. Oh how lucky, Michelle! Thus far we have never found good flooring beneath any of our rooms but we can always hope! Won’t be pulling up the carpet in this one until we paint the walls and ceiling! Cross your fingers! How marvelous to find floor gold in your room!

  4. I can’t wait to see the room when you have it all complete. I am loving the inspirational board, the color is so calming to see. I wouldn’t mind working in the office.
