DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Christmas Wall Art
Create vintage Christmas wall art inexpensively and in just a few simple steps!
Hello, friends!
Are you all ready for Christmas yet?
I’m slowly getting there.
I started some baking this past weekend, wrapped a few presents, and although I thought I was done, added a couple more touches to my Christmas decor!
Today I’m sharing one of those ‘touches’ that ended up being a SUPER simple and totally inexpensive DIY that I just LOVE!
It all started when I found this sweet wall art piece online at yes, you guessed it…Pottery Barn!
Have I told you how much I LOVE shopping at Pottery Barn? Oh yes, I do! But sometimes I end up with something I really didn’t need and instead of enjoying it, I get a huge case of buyer’s remorse!
So now, before I click that “Add to Cart” button, I ask myself, “Do you really NEED that item?” And if the answer is yes, then I ask myself, “Could you MAKE that item?” The answer isn’t always yes, but in this case, I figured it was worth a try. Especially since this wall art cost $150!!!
Like the mercury glass ornaments I recently made that were also inspired by Pottery Barn, I wanted to put my own touch on this wall art.
Since I already have a Christmas sign with the same wording, I decided on another saying. I also wanted this sign to work in our ‘glam’ dining room, so the red frame was out.
With that in mind, I set out to look for a frame.
I found this one that I recently picked up at the Dollar Tree! The gold trim was absolutely perfect for adding that touch of glam I wanted so now it was time to create my wall art!

materials need to create wall art:
- picture frame
- Krylon Looking glass Paint
- Vinegar/Water (in a spray bottle)
- Paper Towel
- Black Spray Paint
- Â Stick on Letters (I bought mine at Dollar General but these are similar)
how to create the wall art
- Remove the back off the frame and set aside.
- Carefully remove the glass insert
- Set the glass insert down on a protected surface.
- Shake the can of Looking Glass Spray well.
- Give the glass insert one light coat of the paint
- Using your spray bottle give the glass a quick mist of the vinegar water-Allow to set up for a second or two.
- Dab the wet spots with the paper towel
Continue these last three steps until you have the ‘vintage’ look you want. I ended up doing it twice more but there really is no right or wrong way of doing this. Once you do have the look you want allow the glass to dry completely. About 30 minutes.
- Turn the glass insert over and give the other side a light coat of black spray paint
- Allow the paint to dry (about 20 minutes)
- Then apply one more light coat
- Allow glass to dry overnight
I absolutely LOVED how vintage the glass looked (minus part of our dining room light fixture reflection in the corner LOL) and it was SO easy!
Now for the lettering. I really liked the look of the inspiration pieces lettering. The use of the different fonts was fun. But unfortunately, our Dollar General only had one font in their stick on lettering available so I went with it.
- Place the glass insert back into the frame (mirror side out).
- Replace the backing
- Turn over and place your lettering on the mirrored front
I chose ‘Merry & Bright’ because it totally encompasses what Christmas should be.
Merry-because as I’ve mentioned I absolutely LOVE the holidays and the happiness and joy it brings! And Bright-because this time of year is magical and so full of hope and promise!
But you could totally put whatever Christmas saying you wanted. In fact, you don’t even have to put a Christmas saying. Think of one that will last all year long if you’d like!
On another note have I mentioned how difficult it is to take a photo of a mirrored surface? Good Grief!
But that aside, I’m totally thrilled with how this DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Christmas Wall Art turned out! It’s exactly what I envisioned and the bonus? Since I already had the Looking Glass paint the total cost was just $ 3 for the frame and lettering!
Now I not only have an item I LOVE but I can enjoy free of any buyer’s remorse!
I hope this inspires you to ask the same question I do. Can you make it for less? Sure, sometimes the answer will be no. But you’re a lot more amazing than you give yourself credit for. So give yourself the chance and create!
If you like this project we’d love it if you shared!

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Christine – I Love how you closed this post because you are right taking a photo with glass is difficult. I love this project – Merry and Bright has been my theme this year and Hobby Lobby has kitchen towels with MB on them if you’re interested.
We’re keeping things very simple and those letters – I need to get some – LOVE – I’m no longer stenciling and these would be great to have around… Great ideas as always and now you’ve perked my interest to go browse through pottery barn online.
Hugs – Carole
Thank you so much, Carole! I’ll definitely check out those towels! And yes, grab those letters! I seriously use them everywhere including my chalkboard (white ones) in my office!
Oh my gosh!! This is gorgeous! And I cannot believe how much it cost you to make it! And how easy it is, too!
I know what you mean about taking photos of picture frames. So frustrating! lol!! But you did a fantastic job!
What a great idea. I love mercury glass and the cost of this DIY. Thanks for sharing. Pinned!
Thank you so much, Terrie! I’m a huge fan too!
What’s the vinegar/water ratio? I love this!
Thank you so much, Aprile! I use a 1:1 ratio for the vinegar and water! Hope that helps!
Hi Christine,
Sorry its been awhile, I love this project ! I did this technique to glass in a door I redid a few years ago.
It’s fun creating. Haply New Year!
Cindy
Thank you, Cindy! That sounds wonderful! Happy New Year to you and yours!
