Mood Board: Remodeling the Upstairs Bathroom!

Hello, friends!

Well, it’s been a LONG while since we’ve done any home improvement projects here on the blog!

It’s not that we haven’t been DOING any home improvements, it’s just that most of them have been the not so exciting kinds of projects. Simple maintenance mostly, and a LOT of organizing, cleaning and throwing away!

But today I’m sharing a SUPER exciting project that we will be working on throughout the next month or so.

Our upstairs full bath!

Like the half bath we remodeled last year, this bathroom needs a LOT of work! This is why, to be honest, we’ve been putting off starting it this long!

That downstairs half bath really through us for a loop after we uncovered some plumbing and electrical issues, and so we are a bit more cautious(terrified) going into this one!

So this time I made a list of all the problems and came up with solutions for each one.

The # 1 problem SHOULD be size. Even though it’s a full bath it’s a small one. But we aren’t expanding at this point, so instead the #1 Problem is lighting!

There is some natural light that comes in from the window. Unfortunately, it’s covered up by shower curtain liner to protect the window trim from getting wet and of course so no one can see in while you’re taking a shower! We are still working on a solution for the window (other than removing it), so for now my focus is on adding more lighting! Right now there is just one sconce above the sink, and it’s simply not enough for putting on make-up, etc. Two will do just fine!

We will also be moving the lighting to the wall where the mirror is.

Problem #2- The Floor

When we first moved into this house the floor in this bathroom was carpeted!!. It was so disgusting that it had to go immediately! So with little or no thought, I bought a roll of vinyl on clearance and Michael installed it. I’ve disliked it ever since!

THIS flooring on the other hand is one I absolutely LOVE! If you’ll remember it’s the one we installed in our half bath. We had some leftover so I thought to keep things cohesive and uniform in the bathrooms I would order some more and use it in this bath!

Problem # 3-Tile

A huge investment in this bathroom isn’t recommended by several of the realtors we talked to, so gutting and replacing all of the tile isn’t an option. What is-is keeping the tile in just the shower area and regrouting it. Then replacing the rest with drywall and paint!

My thoughts are to use a darker grout to give the tile a more modern feel.

Problem # 4 The vanity

This vanity looks like it has seen better days and a new one would be in the budget for sure. But before I start looking I’m going to see if I can give this one a makeover. I think with a little(lot) of paint, new hardware, and faucet this old vanity can be saved! I would also like to add some legs to make it look like a piece of furniture. as well as, raise it up a bit like the inspiration vanity below!

Problem #5 is Storage!

I’m taking care of that with updating the vanity by adding these pretty baskets into the mix along with #8 on the mood board-Shelving!

Problem #6-Wall Color!

Like the flooring, when it came to making this bathroom liveable, I just grabbed a can of leftover paint from the living room and touched up the walls. But the plaster needs repaired and then a fresh coat of paint will brighten everything up!

This time around I’m going with a warm grey because it’s classic, neutral, and goes with the rest of the house. I also think it will be the perfect complement to the black and white going into the room.

I’m also planning on incorporating a little ‘color’ into the space with accents, etc in this soft minty green color!

One problem that is not shown on the board is the drop ceiling in this room! As with every room in this house we’ve remodeled this one is coming down. The scary thing is, inevitably whenever we take one down there are always underlying problems underneath the ceiling. My hope is that there isn’t, but we learned from the half bath so were prepared budget-wise but that doesn’t mean we want to spend it all on repairs!

Once we remove the drop ceiling we will need to fix Problem #7 which is the oval curtain rod and of course, the shower curtain!

As mentioned in # 5 we can always use more storage and I’m taking care of that in Problem #8 by replacing the rustic shelving above the toilet area with clean white shelves! This might turn into another DIY project (how could I not), but we’ll see.

Problem # 9 is all the bare walls that will be ready for filling after we remove the tile and the outdated medicine cabinet on the opposite wall. My plan is to add some history of this old house with black and white photos! This will be a DIY and I’m super excited about it!

Problem # 10- The Outdated Towel Racks!

There are two of these towel racks cemented into the walls!

This one is right above the toilet(horribly unsanitary place for a towel), and the other is “IN” the shower!

I will be replacing the one in the shower with this modern bronze version and adding a smaller one near the sink where it belongs!

Since I already have a black mirror I won’t need to shop for one so that’s a big $$ savings!

And that’s awesome because that leaves more for the accessories!!!

So that is it! The plan for our remodel on our upstairs bathroom!

Yes, it’s going to be a LOT of work, but we’re excited too because this has been a LONG time coming!

We will be documenting every step so I hope you all stay with us through another room remodel! There will be plenty to learn (isn’t there always with old houses) and we will do it on a VERY small budget so you can bet there will be some DIY projects too!
