Buy or DIY-Blooming Flower Easter Centerpiece

Have you ever found a home decor piece that you absolutely LOVED until you saw the price tag? Well, what if you could buy it for less. Or, even better…what if you could MAKE it for WAY less? Which would you choose?

Hello friends!

Welcome to our second edition of Buy or DIY!

This past weekend I went in search of some spring floral inspiration.

Since I haven’t been able to find my spring stash of floral stems I thought maybe I’d buy a few new bunches, or, if I was lucky find an entire arrangement on the cheap!

In my search, I stumbled upon this pretty arrangement.  Ranunculus and tulips are two of my favorite spring flowers, so you can just about guess how gaga I went when I saw them tucked into this simple wood box. Absolute perfection if you ask me. But then I saw the price tag. $179!!! OUCH!

I really loved the color tones and flowers in this arrangement. And that simple box was something I hadn’t thought about using. But that price!!! No thank you!

So I went in search of something similar but at a MUCH lower price tag.

This lovely basket popped up almost immediately and you know what friends?  I actually liked it even more! Instead of the flowers standing tall like the more expensive version,  this arrangement literally filled the box to overflowing. It even had eggs! Something I never would have thought to put in a flower arrangement. Better yet. The price tag on this sweet centerpiece was $59.99 but it was on sale for $41.99!!!

Just in case you’re bad at math like I am, that’s a savings of $137!!!

Even so, before I hit ‘add to cart’ I reminded myself that I had a wood box almost the same size as the expensive arrangement. And if I dug a bit deeper into our storage boxes I’d probably find my floral stash.  I could make my own and it wouldn’t cost me anything. URG! Sometimes I really dislike my cheap budget-friendly conscience.

I have to admit though. It does save us money! With that in mind, off I went in search of that wood box and those lovely florals!

After about an hour of searching, I had some good news and some bad news. The good news was I found the boxes of floral stems that had been missing. Of course, they were on the bottom of all the boxes just as I had thought.

And the bad news? I couldn’t find that wood box. (The downfall of storing items in three different places until we build!)

What I did find though was this natural-toned wicker basket. I actually REALLY liked the airy textured look of the basket, and I decided, ‘what the heck.

With the basket and my florals in hand, I was ready to start creating MY version of the Blooming Easter Centerpiece Arrangement!

Materials you will need to make a blooming easter centerpiece:

how to make a blooming easter centerpiece:
  • Measure/Cut and Lay the floral foam on the bottom of the basket. (As you can see I recycled pieces I had in my craft supply so once again…$0 for the win!
  • Cover the floral foam with tissue paper. This is totally optional. Because as I later discovered you can’t see the foam once you put the stems in. But it did help keep the foam sturdier.
  • Separate the greenery (lambs ear and fern bush).

  • Arrange the greenery in the basket first. I started by placing the stems of the fern bush in the foam and then bending them so they draped over the side. I did this on either side of the basket. Then I added a few stems of the lamb’s ear.

  • Next, I separated the floral stems and laid them out so I could easily grab them and start filling up my basket.

There is no EXACT way of creating this arrangement. I wanted some of the florals to drape over the side so I started with them first and then began to build on that with other stems.

Every few minutes I would step back and look at how the arrangement was shaping up. At times I would move one stem here or there, just to make sure the arrangement looked balanced and full front to back.

The last time I stepped back to check my progress I knew I was done because I fell instantly head over heels in love with my basket of spring flowers!

I wasn’t sure if it was the pops of peach and pink. Or the natural greens. Maybe it was the texture in the basket or the way the cherry blossoms looked so natural draped over the side. I’m not sure what grabbed my heart first but I LOVED it all!

And the best part was, it didn’t cost me a dime to make because I already had everything.

Now don’t worry if you don’t have a basket or any floral stems on hand. Any basket will do and you can find some really nice ones at thrift stores for under $10! As for the floral stems, Dollar Tree has a few nice ones! But I found most of mine at Walmart and they were under $5!

So now the question is…which would you choose.

The high-end Blooming Easter Centerpiece for $179?

Or the lesser-priced but still SUPER lovely l floral arrangement in a box for $41.99!

Or… would you take about $20 and 20 minutes and make your own?

I hope you enjoyed this month’s BUY or DIY. And I hope it inspires you to create your own Blooming Easter Centerpiece!
