Budget-Friendly DIY Faux Potted Succulents
create high-end pottery barn inspired potted succulents for under $10 or less!
Every year I put away all of the Christmas decor right after the new year rings in. This year was no different. But what WAS different in 2021 is that I decided instead of decorating for winter, I would give our home some ‘breathing’ space instead.
So I put EVERYTHING away. That’s right. EVERYTHING. Pillows, candles, knick-knacks, throws(except the one we cozy with while watching movies), even wall art.
Then I let our home breathe.
Decor-less. Uncluttered. Bare.
Living without all the clutter, even for a short time, has opened my eyes and inspired me in ways I never thought were possible.
So much so that when I started to slowly put a pillow here or a candle there, I did so with a clearer idea of how I wanted our home to look.
It’s still a work in progress of course, but I’m loving the new changes & ‘breathable’ spaces I’m creating as each day of this cold and blustery winter passes.
Speaking of creating…Since I started putting a little decor back here and there, I’ve also been creating a few simple but minimal pieces to add some ‘natural’ touches to our home.
I’m SUPER excited to be sharing my latest Pottery Barn Inspired dupe today! It’s so EASY! And I’m so happy with how it turned out!
Before I get to the how-to let me share the GORGEOUS inspiration.
Isn’t there something so zen about this arrangement? Just looking at it makes me breathe easier and begin to relax. I loved it so much, that I decided why not make one for myself?
Of course, it would be so much better with real succulents. But it’s the middle of winter here, which is not exactly a good time to go shopping for plants. Besides, the way faux plants look these days, who would ever know the difference?

what you need to make the potted succulents?
- Pot or Bowl
- Rocks ***I used both small ‘pebble’ size rocks, as well as, larger ones I found out in our rock garden
- Moss
- Faux Succulents
How to make your own potted succulents
- Remove the succulents from their pots.
These pretty potted faux succulents came from the Dollar Tree. I still can’t believe how realistic they look and for $1! AHHH! Each one is ‘poked’ into a styrofoam base inside the pot so they are SUPER easy to remove! TIP: Keep the pots! You can use them in the spring time to start or plant seeds!
2. Place a layer of the larger rocks onto the bottom of your bowl (or pot).
For me this arrangement is just as much about the rocks as it is the succulents. I love the natural raw look of them so I want to actually SEE them!
3. Add another layer of smaller rocks
Layering is key here so I just kept alternating between the smaller and then larger rocks. TIP: If you use river rock like I did try and save some of the ‘nicer’ ones for the top layer.
4. Place your succulents in between the rocks (Larger ones first)
I had a total of 5 larger succulents and 2 smaller ones. I think the amount was just perfect for the size of bowl I had without overcrowding it. But you could definitely add more. Again, I really love the texture and natural tones of the rocks so I wanted to showcase them as well.
5. Fill in the empty space around the base of the succulents with moss.
This step is totally optional, but I LOVE the added texture and organic touch of nature the moss provides. I barely used a 1/4 of the bag I had but even that little bit made a big difference.
6. Fill in with smaller (nicer) rocks for one final top layer.
And that, my friends is as they say…a wrap! You now have a relaxing-zen succulent garden.
Bonus…The inspiration potted succulents cost $99! My version? $0 because I had everything on hand. But if I were to buy everything needed? $10 or less! That’s right, my friends! An $88 savings!
Bonus…Bonus…You don’t even need to water this garden! Not even a little bit! Just sit back and ENJOY!
And oh have I ever enjoyed this sweet little potted succulent garden! I do so much that I’m planning on making another one for our living room. I’m thinking a darker bowl this time with maybe white rocks?
I hope today’s post inspires you to give yourself, and your home a bit of grace this year. Give each of you as much time as you need to just…breathe. I promise you, the peace and inspiration you find will be rejuvenating and that will reflect in every room in your home.
If you try today’s DIY we would love to hear about it!

Hi Christine,
Great job and happy you posted this project. Just because it’s simple it still needs to be seen.
Cindy
Aw, thank you so much, Cindy! I’m so glad you liked it! I’m really enjoying the potted succulents! It was a fun project!
You could seriously write an entire book on Pottery Barn hacks, Christine! They’re always so good and I’m putting this one on the love list too! Hugs, CoCo
LOL! Now there’s a thought! Thank you, sweet friend!
What a great idea to remove all the clutter and let your home breathe. I love that!! I don’t have a lot of decorations out right now because of the renovations going on, but there’s still lots of clutter! Such as chairs and boxes taking up my living room. Ugh! After we’re finished remodeling I’m not going to let my home breathe!
This DIY is so pretty! And I can’t believe how cheap! I have all of those things, too, so I’m pinning this so I can remember to make it!!
It’s been AMAZING to have no decorations up this year, Michelle! I totally understand the ‘clutter’ during remodeling! It can get so overwhelming! We are starting a few projects here too so our house won’t stay this way for long! I hope you enjoy making one of these potted succulents! I’m really loving mine!
I was thinking to make my own succulents arrangements , and didn’t know where to start, this is is some great tips on cheaper budget, thanks for sharing Christine!
You are so welcome, Aarthi! I plan to create a ‘real’ succulent garden when the weather warms up! Good luck with yours!
Do you have to water them?
You sure don’t, Sue because they are faux succulents! 🙂
This is one of the best hacks I’ve seen in a while. Love it! Look for your feature this week at the Tuesday Turn About Link Party! Hope to see you there!
Oh my goodness, Michelle! Thank you so much! That truly means the world to me coming from someone as talented as you! I’ll definitely stop by the party!
