An Update on Remodeling the Upstairs Full Bath!

Hello, friends!

Well, as I write today’s post we are officially at the halfway point in our upstairs full bath remodel!

It’s been a WHOLE lot of dirty and dusty, but at this point in the project, things are FINALLY starting to come together!

So I wanted to give you all a quick glimpse into what we’ve been up to and how things are progressing!

So if you checked out our initial post on this remodel here, then you probably remember this ugly drop-down ceiling. I get that people installed these back in the day to save money on their heating, but REALLY? I just hate them, and sadly they have been in almost every room in this old house! The good thing is, they are pretty easy to tear down!

And you can bet it was the FIRST thing we tore down when we started demo! Partly because neither one of us could stand it any longer.

But mostly because what we found behind it would determine our budget! Thankfully, though not a pretty sight, the ceiling was intact and besides a good cleaning, it would not require any repairs. The walls beneath it though, was another story!

Those aren’t just small superficial holes in the plaster walls. Those are pretty big and deep. Not that we haven’t had to repair them in other rooms. We have. But it’s not a fun job and it takes TIME and patience! Oh and $$$!

But all of our hard work paid off because the ceiling is now covered with new VERY clean drywall and primed.  And the walls are repaired and have a fresh coat of paint!

Speaking of paint. If you remember I chose a medium grey initially. But before I bought a whole gallon I tested with a sample on a small portion of one wall. It ended up being WAY too dark for such a small space with very little light. So instead I chose this ‘greige’ called Catamaran.

***It looks darker in this photo and the sample below than what it really is on the walls.

We’ve used this color in several other rooms in this home and I love it, so it was a win-win!

Next came the sink area! If you remember my plan was to give that plain white vanity a complete makeover. We also needed to update the electrical in this space-which included moving the light fixture, and replacing the outlet with a GFI. And the biggest and dustiest job in this corner? Taking out all of that tile!

This part ended up not being as bad as we thought, and thankfully there was no damage behind the tiles! (Can I get a WOOT WOOT?)

Now the vanity on the other hand…

That ended up being MORE of a challenge than I thought it would be. I’ll be sharing ALL the details and full reveal in another post real soon!

There are so many other details with this bathroom update, but I’ll save those for another post. For today, I’ll end with the bathroom floor. If you remember it was this boring, ugly vinyl that was so worn and torn it looked just AWFUL!

Well, that was all removed and we laid down a brand new subfloor!

I won’t be sharing the full look of the flooring until the final reveal day! But here’s a sneak peek as we do a ‘test’ run to see how the tiles fit before laying.

As I said we are at the halfway point of the remodel. So what’s left?

  • Give the walls and ceiling a second coat of paint
  • Repair and Refinish shower tiles
  • Paint trim
  • Give the window a “NEW” look
  • Replace the shower hardware
  • Replace the suspending shower curtain rod
  • Hang shelving
  • Install Light fixture
  • Re-install Vanity
  • Re-install Toilet
  • Organize vanity
  • Decorate shelving
  • Hang Wall Art

Whew! Doesn’t seem like we are half-way done at all, does it?! We are though and I can’t wait to share the final reveal with you!

Stay tuned for more!

I hope you enjoyed today’s post  An Update on Remodeling the Upstairs Full Bath!

  1. Nice work Christine,
Ceiling work is for people who know how to follow through. Kudos! I say this because we had a similar ceiling through our entire farmhouse leftover from the 70’s. We ended up removing it to find finished sheet rock. Qhich led us to installing a pine ceiling throughout and I loved it. It was awesome! Hard work but well worth it…

They say it’s the bathrooms and kitchens that sell a house so hopefully this will help you move forward. Looks great and I’m looking forward to seeing it all finished.

This weekend I’m working on my RV kitchen, ripped out the oven/stove for more counter and storage space. Easy to let go because I use my nuwave oven full time, love it!

Anyways always fun to stop by and see what you’ve been up too. I look forward to Friday mornings. Your email and Patti’s seem to head me towards a positive weekend.

    Hugs, Carole

  2. It definitely takes some time and effort to fix these old homes but the end result is always worth it, my friend! Crossing fingers that this gets us to the finish line and we can move onto our next adventure! Your kitchen reno sounds fun and having extra counter space is always a plus!! I’ve wondered about that nuwave oven. Sounds awesome! Thank you so much for stopping by, Carole! Your support and friendship mean the world to me! Have a blessed weekend! Hugs, Christine

  3. Christine,

I’m very much here in the same boat taking our upstairs bathroom remodelling and renovation work being done but by professionals and not myself. I admire you for carrying over such endeavours all by yourself. We had a blue bathroom from straight ’70s and the bathtub was iron-made weighing 320 pounds easily and it was a nightmare to get it removed. It is taking time due to various reasons but by next week it should take full shape. Renovating old houses means accepting some challenging tasks and you and your husband make such a perfect team. Can’t wait till you reveal your final look. Thanks for sharing your remodelling adventures.

  4. Thank you so much, Hasin! It appears great minds think alike! (We are both remodeling our bathrooms!) That is so awesome! Thankfully our tub is in good shape otherwise I fear it would be quite heavy too! As for color-our bathroom tiles were originally gold speckled!!! UGH! I painted them almost immediately when we moved in! Good luck with your renovation! I bet it’s going to turn out beautifully!

  5. Wow, so much hard work Christine but it’s definitely paying off! I’m so excited about the reveal and I know you guys have to be too. I love everything you’ve shared so far and I can’t wait to see even more. Hugs, CoCo

  6. Thank you so much, CoCo! Fixing up this old home has not always been an easy task but as each room is completed we feel like we’ve done our part in keeping these old beautiful homes standing and hopefully for another 100 years!

  7. How exciting!! It’s going to look amazing when you’re done. I absolutely love those floor tiles!!! Renovating a bathroom is such hard work and time consuming, but it’s worth it.

  8. Thank you so much, Michelle! The floor tiles are one of my FAVORITE parts of the bathroom! I’d put them everywhere if I could, LOL!

  9. Thank you so much for your positive feedback, Paige! There’s a lot of ‘ugly’ when it comes to remodeling and we’re definitely not afraid to share the details! We appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment.
