DIY Thanksgiving Napkin Holders

Let’s make some DIY Thanksgiving Napkin Holders!!!!

Hello, friends!

If you read Wednesday’s post then you know I’m starting the planning process for my Thanksgiving table.

After today’s post, you can probably guess which inspiration tablescape I chose!

Yes, I chose the classic black, white, and gold tablescape!

I LOVED each of the tablescapes but I have to say that one was my absolute FAVORITE!

Mostly because I’ve always been a HUGE fan of black and white together. Adding the gold is just icing on the cake for me.

So I ordered up a few of the items I found and I’m going to be creating my own version of that lovely table.

I also have a couple of DIYs planned for the tablescape, and today I’m sharing one of them.

It’s been a tradition for quite a few years now that I always make personal napkin holders, along with a special take-home treat for each guest on Thanksgiving.

For this year’s napkin holders, I wanted to keep with the black, white, and gold theme. I also wanted to personalize it with the name or initials of each person.

In the past, we’ve always filled out sheets of paper listing all the things we are thankful for. And then we go around the table and everyone reads their list. But this year I decided to do something different.

If you look in the dictionary the word “THANKFUL” means pleased and relieved. Both, of course, are wonderful feelings. But if you look up the word “GRATEFUL” you will find it means showing an appreciation of kindness. Which is actually more than just a feeling or an emotion. It’s an action.

So this year I attached that word to each holder as a reminder that we all need to be more kind. To each other. To our friends. To our co-workers. To complete strangers. And yes, most importantly, to ourselves.

what you’ll need to create thanksgiving napkin holders:
how to make the napkin holders:
  • Spray Paint the leaves with the gold paint.

I gave each leaf a light coat of paint and then allowed them to dry for about 10-15 minutes. Then I gave them another coat and allowed them to dry for another 15 minutes. Once they were dry I flipped them over and gave them one more light coat on the back side. Then I set them aside and proceeded with the rest of the project.

  • paint the tags with the black chalk paint

Initially, I used chalkpaint to paint the tags because I was going to use a chalk pen and write out my wording. Unfortunately, I disliked my penmanship SO badly that I decided to use a stencil instead.

NOTE: If you are going to use the stencil you could definitely use just black craft paint to paint the tags.

stencil the wording onto the tag with white paint

Although the stencil I bought at the Dollar General just barely fit on the tag, I still like the font and the almost vintage way it came out.

paint the lettering

I used the chalk paint to paint the letters because I had it out. But again, you could definitely pain the letters with whatever color or paint you have on hand.

attach the letters to the leaves with hot glue

I didn’t get a picture of this process, (my bad) but basically, I put a bead of hot glue on the back of my lettering and stuck them onto the center of the leaf.

Again, I used my hot glue gun and placed a bit of glue on the top corner of the tag, and then pressed a corner of the leaf down onto it. Once it held, I went onto the next one and repeated it four more times.

SIDENOTE: Funny family trivia here but we have 4 M’s in our family. Michael, Melissa, Mandy(her given name is Amanda but she goes by Mandy), and of course our sweet grandson, Max!

attach the napkin holder to the napkin with gold paper clips

I had gold paper clips in my office, but if you don’t, you could just spray paint the regular ones with the gold spray paint.

For now, I just attached the napkin holders to one of my plain white napkins, but I ordered those ADORABLE polka dot napkins from Wednesday’s post so I’m looking forward to seeing how they look with them!

  1. Love how this came together, Christine, it’s so pretty and elegant. Plus, you know I’m obsessed with monogramms. This is going to be such a special way to celebrate and would even be great for NYE too! Hugs, CoCo
